Pulmonology
Overview
Residents spend four weeks with staff pulmonologists at various locations. The goal of the pulmonology rotation is for residents to learn about the diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and aeromedical implications of lung conditions, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer, pneumonia, bronchitis, and interstitial lung disease. The rotations occur at Naval Hospital Pensacola, the VA clinic, and with the Pulmonary Lung Group. During all rotations, aerospace medicine residents serve in a direct patient care role under the supervision of a staff pulmonologist. Residents are expected to demonstrate competency in the referral process for advanced medical and surgical evaluation and worker fitness and disability evaluation of individuals suffering from these conditions and diseases.

Pulmonology Topics
Spirometry
Since spirometry is a key component of many occupational medical examinations, this is a core competency that residents master by the end of their pulmonology rotation.
